Fullmetal Alchemist follows two brothers on their quest to find redemption from an act of incredible tragedy: the attempt to resurrect their dead mother by performing forbidden human transmutation. In their search for the holy grail of alchemy--the philosopher's stone--they encounter many obstacles, make friends and enemies, and face many moral and spiritual choices.
I have to recommend reading the manga rather than watching the anime. Although I did really love some of the animation in the anime (how can alchemy not look cool huh?), unfortunately the producers of the anime felt that rather than wait for the manga to be fully written, they would just go ahead and make up their own ending, and while it is alright in and of itself, it does cut the story off about halfway through the manga, and I have to say I really appreciate the philosophical ideas the manga gets into later in the story than the anime reaches.
