Satoshi Kon's complex anime is difficult to describe. Throughout a very episodic structure, a character known only as "Lil' Slugger" is explored as he attacks various innocent people. The only question is, who is "Lil' Slugger"?
Tsukiko Sagi, a famous cartoonist known for her creation of the character Maromi, is under pressure at her work to come up with a new hit. Meanwhile, an enigmatic character dubbed "Lil' Slugger" has been wreaking havoc all over the city, attacking innocent people in the streets and in their homes. Detectives Ikari and Maniwa investigate these attacks, only to discover that there may be a much darker side to Lil' Slugger than anyone could have imagined.
Overall, the anime explores the themes of fear and repression, their psychological effects, the methods people have of coping with them, and the means to achieving victory over them. Introspective and challenging, Paranoia Agent delivers a definitive message.
